Stubborn Goat Gastropub
Hello, fellow Haligonians and people that just love to eat,
We're very excited to be starting Halifax Table and to be writing the first of many blog entries on the deliciousness that the HRM has to offer. Looking forward to writing about our eating/drinking experiences in Halifax and the surrounding area, and hearing from you about our entries and your advice on great eats and drinks.
Stubborn Goat Gastropub - August 11, 2018
After a beautiful morning checking out the Halifax Seaport Market and strolling around Downtown Halifax, it was time to grab a bite at one of the many attractive food options around the Argyle walking street. We decided on the Stubborn Goat Gastropub on Grafton St. basically because of the number of people that were eating there when we arrived. ***side note, in our travels around the world, we've come to the conclusion that restaurants are usually busy for a good reason*** Also the patio offered some decent shade from the sun, so we initially sold on Stubborn Goat.
Stubborn Goat Gastropub opened in 2013 and is a part of the Legendary Hospitality Group in Halifax, which also includes Antojo Tacos + Tequila, Stubborn Goat Beer Garden, Durty Nelly's and the Rooftop. The theme, atmosphere, and decor of Stubborn Goat is quite frankly unoriginal, as it bears a great similarity with numerous other mid-scale casual dining options out there, however, we felt comfortable and welcomed upon our arrival.
We arrived not too hungry, but definitely thirsty from a morning of walking. The drink menus at Stubborn Goat were quite extensive with numerous cocktail and wine options and probably 20 draft beers on tap. Also included in the brunch menu was a $4 Caesar, so my choice of drink was easy. Nasil went with a beer, that was a little bit pricey at $7.50 for a 16oz. draft, but still very refreshing. For lunch, I ordered the Keto Crabcake Salad while Nasil chose the Buffalo Fried Chicken (she loves her fried chicken and beer :)). There were several good options on the brunch/lunch menu so a re-visit to Stubborn Goat may be needed before a comprehensive review can be written.
The service at Stubborn Goat was friendly and welcoming, but a bit slow for our liking. The food we ordered definitely wasn't the most complicated, but we still waited about 45 minutes to receive it. Once it arrived the presentation was appealing and our hungriness had increased significantly. The crabcakes that accompanied my salad had a beautiful almond crust on the outside that added a wonderful complimentary sweetness to the crabcakes. We initially enjoyed the first couple bites of the crabcakes, but after finishing both, Nasil and I found them to be much too salty for our tastes. The nice flavor of the crabs was simply being drowned by the salt in the cakes A little less salty and they would have been perfect. The salad that came with the crabcakes was excellent and did help to cleanse the salt from our palates from the crabcakes.
Nasil's Buffalo Fried Chicken came with a pesto-flavored slaw. A very unusual pairing with the chicken, was delicious none the less. The chicken itself was just meh...deep fried dark meat in an abundance of batter, covered by your everyday run of the mill Frank's Red Hot and melted butter sauce. We were honestly expecting full pieces of chicken when we ordered this dish, but it came in bite-sized pieces and served more as an appy than a lunch.
Overall, our experience at Stubborn Goat wasn't bad, but not great at the same time. Given our small sample size, we're not ready to write this place off yet, however, we'd have to eat something much better next time to give this place our endorsement.
We'd love to hear from you about your experience at Stubborn Goat Gastropub and also some ideas for places we should visit in the future.
