The Old Triangle

The Old Triangle - September 22, 2018

If you've never been to Halifax, one thing you should know is this city is jam packed with some pretty amazing pubs. One such pub, is The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse located in downtown Halifax at 5136 Prince Street. Popular with locals and tourists The Old Triangle started pouring refreshing pints back in 2000. The pub itself is split in to three separate rooms: The Snug, The Pourhouse (including a fine whiskey bar), and Tigh an Cheoil (the house of music). Distinctly Irish in its decor, I wouldn't say its the most luxurious pub I'd ever stepped into, but it does have its charm.

Though Nasil and I were thirsty (as we usually are), the point of our first visit to The Old Triangle was to grab a bite to eat for lunch. We'd walked bar this busy spot on several occasions and always planned to drop in at some point, and
this was that day. As we walked into the Tigh an Cheoil entrance, we were warmly greeted and told to grab any seat we liked. This theme of warm and welcoming, at the same time efficient service, lasted throughout our entire visit. We were quickly given menus and our orders were taking just a couple minutes after.

As you can see from the pictures of the menus, The Old Triangle serves pretty standard pub fare with a Maritimes / Irish flare. The beer menu offers a good selection of local and imported draught and bottles choices. For drinks Nasil selected a very delicious Murphy's Stout, while I went with "a throwback to university," Clancy's Amber Ale. With the first sip, I saw flashbacks of unopened textbooks, multiple strikeouts with girls, and dirty late night poutines...ah good times. As for lunch, both of us were feeling like a bowl of seafood chowder, but also something a bit more filling. We decided to split a bowl of chowder and a chicken club wrap.

The food arrived in what seemed like 5 minutes and our initial impression was "wow, that's a lot of food." The bowl of chowder was a decent size and accompanied by some sort of bread that was similar to a tea biscuit, and some crackers, while the wrap came with a mountain of hand-cut fries and a homemade coleslaw. Starting with the chowder, it had a great broth, but not enough of the good stuff for our liking; delicious chunks of random fish bits. The wrap, to be honest, was better than I expected it to be. Ordering a wrap of any kind at a pub can be a risk, as you don't really associate fresh with pub food. Surprisingly the ingredients were pretty fresh, and the chicken was nicely breaded without being too greasy. The fries were great....as fries usually are, and the coleslaw was a very nicely done and a great pairing with the wrap itself. While we ate our servers came over several times to check on us, and refill water when needed.

To give a complete review or rating for The Old Triangle, we'll definitely have to come back some evening to sample a few more beverages and check out the live music. That being said, we really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of the pub and the great service we received there. The food was pretty good and the beverages were cold (and also real pint size: 20oz).
