I Love Pho

I Love Pho - August 19, 2018

I love pho...actually I love all Vietnamese food. When Nasil and I lived in Victoria, BC,  we visited every Vietnamese Restaurant in the city, and tried to eat Vietnamese food at least once a week. We also had the pleasure to spend a week in Vietnam last year, which only increased our love for this amazing cuisine. One of our worries in coming to live in the HRM was: "Were we going to be able to find decent Vietnamese food." Unbelievable, the first restaurant we visited, I Love Pho, was a tremendous success.

We were initially attracted to this place because people told us it was the most authentic Vietnamese restaurant in the city (well, actually Bedford) as it was actually run by Vietnamese people. The restaurant would be easy to miss on the Bedford Highway if you're not paying attention. From the outside, the restaurant is nothing really to look at. There is some outdoor seating, if you like to watch cars flying by, but we chose to sit in the inside The place seats about 20 people, I'd guess, and the interior is no more exciting than the exterior...but this didn't really matter to us, as I'm not really sure I've seen a fancy Vietnamese restaurant in my life. What we came for was the food, and to be more specific some pho.

When we arrived there was just one person working the cash and serving customers. We quickly received menus and water upon sitting down. While I usually always order the classic Pho Tai, the chef recommended Bun Bo Hue grabbed my attention. The idea of rice vermicelli noodles with lots of beef in sweet, sour, salty and spicy broth with a strong lemongrass flavor seemed good to me. Nasil on the other hand went with one of her faves the Pho Ca (seafood).

The food arrived in just 10 minutes, which was great because we were starving at this point...and a little hungover :). With the meals, arrived a good amount of bean sprouts, basil, and limes, to garnish our soups as we saw fit. The Bun Bo Hue definitely did not disappoint. It was quite spicy, which I'm totally OK with, and there was plenty of meat to please any carnivore like myself. The vermicelli noodles are a bit tricky to pick up with chopsticks (and I'm a 3rd-degree black belt in chopsticks), but needless to say the noodles found a new home by the end of this meal. Nasil's Pho was also very good. The broth had a good deep flavor to it and the noodle/seafood portion was sufficient for her. Nasil likes to load up on the sriracha in her Pho, but the flavors were strong enough to stand out amongst the wave of hot sauce.

The price of our bill was about $30 when it was all said and done (2 Soups and lots of water {free}). A little steep compared to what we used to pay in Victoria and Vancouver, but worth every penny. We really liked this place and would like to get back to try some other dishes on the menu like their Banh Mi and their Bun Bo Nam Bo. Overall, I'd say check this spot out if you're in the area, or even if you aren't in the area, make the trip to I Love Pho.
